The earliest known writing system is attributed to Canjiie around 2600 BC. The system he started developed into the oldest surviving writing system by about 1200 BC. Various forms of this system have developed over the years and the written languages of Japan, Korea, and Viet Nam have made use of many of these Chinese characters.
