Kodomo No Hi is a national holiday celebrated in Japan on the 5th day of the 5th month (May 5). Prior to 1948 this holiday was Boy's Day, and celebrated the health and strength of boys. In 1948 Boy's Day (Tango No Sekku) was combined with Girl's Day (Hinamatsuri-March 3rd) and the for Boy's Day was kept but the holiday was renamed Kodomo No Hi (Children's Day), a national holiday to celebrate the happiness of all children and to express gratitude toward mothers.

Many of the traditions of Boy's Day persist on this holiday, such as Flying Carp Banners (to symbolize strength) with fish representing the members of a family, displaying Kabuto (samurai helmets) and Iris are also part of the celebration with their leaves signifying a samurai sword. Hinamatsuri is still celebrated on March 3rd with elaborate displays of dolls and other customs, but it does not have the status of a national holiday.
