A Moon Gate is a circular opening in a garden wall to gain access to a garden. Moongates are a traditional architectural element in Chinese gardens and can be found in Japan as well. Moon gates have a variety of different spiritual meanings for their various shapes and for each piece of tile. The sloping roofs of the gate represent the half moon of Chinese summers. The tips of the roof tiles usually have a talisman on each end. Chinese and Japanese gardens often employ moon gates as a display of graceful beauty and are found in gardens around the world. Moon gates provide a silent invitation to visitors: come in, sit down, enjoy the garden's beauty. The gates were originally found only in the gardens of wealthy Chinese nobles. Note: the Moon Gate is often mistaken as a Japanese architectural structure. It is believed that the Japanese discovered Moon Gates when they first went into China. (Source...Wikipedia)
